Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world.

A good citizen & educator create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community.

 

  • Establish a learning culture that promotes curiosity and critical examination of online resources and fosters digital literacy and media fluency.

  • Mentor students in safe, legal and ethical practices with digital tools and the protection of intellectual rights and property.

  • Model and promote management of personal data and digital identity and protect student data privacy.

It is important for all digital users to understand the meaning of digital citizenship. Below are the results of a recent survey I created using Google survey concerning digital citizenship.

Shark and ray biology provided an introduction to the biology of sharks and rays, with special emphasis on regional shark fauna and field techniques.

 

Topics covered included chondrichthyan origin, systematics, sensory biology, locomotion, food consumption, osmoregulation, reproductive biology, life history, ecology, fisheries and conservation. 

 

In addition, longline and gillnet sampling  provided firsthand knowledge of field techniques and local shark identification.

  • The City of Gulf Breeze's Deadman's Island Restoration Project, Gulf Breeze, Florida

 

Volunteering & Learning about the importance of our Marine Ecosystems under Marine Biologist, Heather Reed was is an excellent way to instill the essential act of Citizenship.

 

The coastal restoration project at Deadman's Island had several main goals: restore and conserve habitat, replenish and protect living coastal and marine resources, restore water quality, enhance community resilience and restore and revitalize the gulf economy through juvenile fisheries. 

 

The purpose of the project is to protect the peninsula called Deadman’s Island and an existing salt marsh habitat while increasing the biological productivity of the Gulf Breeze aquatic area. 

 

The fossilized and recycled oyster shell Ecodisc Ecosystem was designed just for Deadman's Island project and the first to be permitted in the State of Florida.  The Oyster shell Ecodisc was created to provide a natural substrate for oyster spat.

The R/V Alabama Discovery is a 65 foot x 23 foot wooden vessel covered in fiberglass built by Chesapeake Boat Works in Maryland.  The vessel has twin 650hp Cummins engines and can cruise at 15 knots.  It can carry a class of 38 students for its educational mission.  For research cruises the vessel has  a 500lb side davit, a large winch with the capabilities of pulling a 45 foot net and full instrumentation package.

Marine Ecology studies provided a general survey of marine plants, invertebrates and vertebrates, the communities they form and the physical and chemical factors that influence them. Field trips included marsh, seagrass, and dune habitats. Sampling from research vessels and laboratory exercises served as an introduction into the diversity of marine habitats and organisms.

I had the opportunity to learn and study marine organisms as they interact with each other and their environment, and examine marine ecological theories.

 

The laboratory consisted of field trips to a variety of marine habitats and field problems was examined teams in small groups. Habitats selected for emphasis included reefs, kelp forests, seagrass meadows, the rocky intertidal and deep-sea hydrothermal vents.

Athens State University provided an opportunity to learn and experience the importance of the earth's Gulf Ocean's Ecosystem & how it contributes to society via bases for food, water, medicines and materials.

Experiences were applied via class lectures & hands-on in the field.

My theory is that each individual has the opportunity to learn & become a good citizen. 

 

Volunteerism is an excellent way to instill the essential act of "Citizenship".
